A Piece of the Past!
Gwaltney Stencil Ornaments

HamAd3-o2.jpg

Smithfield is the Ham Capital of the World, and Gwaltney is the name that put her on the map!  Founded in 1870, the Gwaltney Ham soon became an epicurean delicacy shipped around the world.  P.D. Gwaltney, Jr. was a marketing wiz, making his ham known far and wide, including in the Guinness Book of World Records. ham1.jpg His “pet ham” of 1902 is still housed in the Isle of Wight County Museum!

These solid brass ornaments have been reproduced from the exact design of the original stencil, used over 100 years ago.  Howard W. Gwaltney (P.D. Jr.’s son) remembered how workers would scrape the soot from the smoke houses and mix it with kerosene to make the ‘ink’ used for labeling shipping crates with these stencils.  This design is one of those found in an abandoned warehouse some years ago, and has been created as a memento of a simpler time gone by, a town’s industry, and a family’s heritage.

ornament.jpgThese ornaments measure 3.5 inches in diameter, tied with a black satin ribbon, and displayed nicely in a velvet lined box.  They look great on your Christmas tree, hanging in your window, or even matted and framed.  What a wonderful gift for your children, grandkids, or your friends, and a great way to share your family’s history with those you love!!

Boxed Ornaments -- $12 each (ppd)
Set of four -- $45 (ppd)
